Meet the Team

Wondering who your instructors are? At Gary’s Surf School, we’re proud to have a crew of passionate surfers who love nothing more than sharing the stoke. Each instructor brings their own experience, style, and story to the waves – but the goal is always the same: to get you surfing safely, confidently, and with a big smile on your face.

If you want to know who you’re getting in the waves with, below you’ll find a bit about who they are, what they love about Muizenberg, and why they’re excited to teach you.

Asi

Local legend with endless stoke

Hey, I’m Asi – your local Muizenberg surfer! I started surfing at 8 and it’s been part of my life ever since. Surfing means everything to me; nothing else comes close to that feeling of freedom. As a coach, I want people to join me on this adventure, discover the stoke, and share the joy that surfing brings.

Paco

Longboard fan & Muizenberg local

I’m 18 and based right here in Muizenberg, where the waves feel like my second home. I’m a longboard fan at heart, but I’ll ride anything that gets me in the water. I love working at Gary’s because of the vibe, the team, and the chance to share my favourite pastime with others. Teaching here means helping people discover the ocean in the same relaxed, stoked way that I do.

Ané

Confidence-builder & kids’ coach

I focus on helping people feel confident in the water while keeping every session fun and safe. I love teaching the basics properly so surfers can progress with solid technique and start feeling at home in different ocean conditions.

I work really well with kids, teens, and beginners of all ages and enjoy making sessions playful for younger surfers, but also motivating for adults who are learning – it feels amazing to help people enjoy the ocean the way I do. I love Muizenberg because the waves are super friendly and perfect for learning. There’s such a positive vibe in the water, and it’s one of the best places to grow as a surfer.

James

Wave rider, DJ and Day Trade

I’ve been surfing since I was 8 – so that’s nearly 10 years now. I ride both longboards and shortboards, but Muizenberg is still my number one spot because of its awesome vibe and beginner-friendly waves. As a coach, I just want to share my love of surfing and make sure everyone has the best possible time in the water. Since I’m 17, I find I connect especially well with teens and younger surfers, but I enjoy working with all ages. Outside the surf, I spend time DJing and day trading, but the ocean always comes first.

Ben

All-rounder with a powerful story

I started surfing at age 6, and honestly, it saved my life. Surfing kept me away from the gangster lifestyle in my neighbourhood and gave me balance and purpose. As an instructor, I love meeting new people and learning from their stories while sharing my own passion for the sea. I surf both shortboards and longboards and enjoy teaching all ages. Muizenberg is special to me for its strong surf community and, of course, the fun, consistent waves.

Leah

Ocean athlete & kids’ coach

I started surfing when I was 4 and have loved it ever since. I especially enjoy working with younger kids, but I also like helping adults discover the stoke of standing up on a board for the first time. Seeing that joy is what makes coaching so rewarding. Muizenberg’s waves are my favourite because of the welcoming surf community and the fun vibe in the water. When I’m not surfing, I keep active with soccer and water polo.

Juba

Surf for fun, not for points

I began surfing at age 4, but my passion really grew during the Covid-19 lockdown when surfing gave me freedom, exercise, and happiness. For me, surfing isn’t about competition – it’s about having fun and finding escape. As a coach, I want to share that feeling with others and show how life-changing the ocean can be.
